Last weekend I had the luck to deal with a new model, Joyias. For this shoot, we went for a Gothic look to create photographs for her portfolio and mine. Joyias has some interesting Gothic styled clothing to go with. Her hair color really like the colour of the clothing used in this point and that makes for some pleasing portraits.
For short I used a basic light set up with 2 Nikon SB900speedlights camera left and set with shoot through umbrellas for keyand fill.
Two additional SB900 were placed at about 45 degrees behindher, left and right, for rim lighting and another SB900 with a Honl 1/4grid was overhead for hair light. The set was shooting on a medium grayseamless background. The photos were made using my Nikon D700s and Nikkor 24-70/F2.8 and 70-200/F2.8 lenses, and the fall was controlled by Nikon's CLS via an SU800.
We also worked on some other images with different a different clothing and posing styles. The estimate below is one of my favorites from the set. You can see more photo from our hit in the People/Indoor and Themed galleries.
The face and gesture is captivating, and again we have the the colors complimentary. You'll also discover that she if off center, with her head at a rule of thirds intersections, a composition that is generally much more pleasing than having her centered in the photo.
Working with Joyias is a real pleasure. It hit the session so much more fun when you get a practice that collaborates and contributs ideas to the shoot. And Joyias has a great sense of humor. I'm looking forward to working with her in the future on other ideas and concepts that will take some of her 'critters' (snakes and tortoises) for some dramatic themes. If you are looking for a model to go with, or the reptiles that she raises and makes available for photo shoots and movies, in the Southern New Hampshire area, check out Joyias on ModelMayhem.
When you are desiging photographs, look for complimentary colors to emphasise the photos to create the movement and tell the story you are presenting. Work the compositions so they are not static. Try poses and compositions that add drama and try to the scenery along with your more traditional portait poses.
As always, have fun with your photography.
