I enjoyed David Crowder's article on the gay benefits saga in this week's El Paso Inc. As Crowder often does, he visited all sides of the matter and delivered the data without bias. You should contain the article out if you haven't already.
One thing I took note of in his article is the thought of "political suicide." I do believe that the conception is one that exists in realism and not only in the language of smart ass op-ed written by folks like me.
Take the democrats slaughter a couple weeks ago and honestly assess what happened and you'll know you've seen "political suicide."
However. There's ever a "however" with subjects like this.
Theargumentthat anyone on El Paso's City Council is committing "political suicide," is a strong argument to win given that most of them are done, and have been done, for quite some time. You can't kill them when they are already dead.
1. Beto O'Rourke - said he isn't running again and has no involvement in higher office due to havinga gaggle of kids to raise. I think he's had plenty of the political game and is probably looking to go to the succeeding phase of life - whatever that may be. His views on cannabis and now the gay insurance put him at odds with voters in El Paso and I'm certain he knows that. That's not saying that he's wrong and they're right. they simply don't see eye to eye anymore.
2. Susie Byrd - She can't run again for council and truly has no luck at being mayor. I don't see her working for anything else. She will have ahard time winning anywhere outside her district.
3. Steve Ortega - Here's a guy who is a lawyer and should be making money by the wheelbarrow, but has instead suffered through two elections to preserve a job that pays in a year what could make in an afternoon as a lawyer. I've talked directly to Ortega and he doesn't sound like a guy looking to run for another place at any level.
4. Rachel Quintana - She was the big surprise nobody could have guessedwhen she get the golden lazy boy - Jimmy Suerken for a place on city council. She allegedly ran foul of the law shortly after and has since been the dupe of existence on the wrong political team when it came to how the character has been prosecuted. Expect her face to get fast-tracked right before her election insuring that evening if she does run, she can't win.
5. Anne Lilly - She's going to run again I hear. However, there are about really big names gunning for her council seat next year. Mrs. Lilly has made all sides of the local political spectrum angry at one metre or another (which shows me that she is not "owned" by any one group of people) and she won't be capable to find with any one of them plenty to put up lots of a struggle against a business community candidates. And for clarity - "business community" candidate is just someone who is a businessman and may, or may not, have the support of the big money guys in town.
6.Emma Acosta - She wants to be mayor. it's the funniest thing I've always heard given her secret relations with the metropolis and her want to maintain those dealings away from public consumption because she knows how bad they'd maker her look. My source tells me that she'd be run out of power by an angrymob carrying farm implements and torches if the actual story ever got out. She may keep her seat, but I see there are about high-powered young folks look to bring her out. And these masses will put up a better press than Alex Lozano ever did. Plus, none of them have any friends who did federal time on corruption charges involving Emma's former department.
7. Mayor Cook - I consider the mayor is done politically. It's not that he has done a bad job, he hasn't. It's not that he has done a secure job either, because he hasn't. He's been steady - right down the centre and likely a little distant from some of the issues he should have been on top of - in my opinion. Higher offices are all filled with immovable objects at the moment,so he's going to give to see himself a new gig when his condition is up in a few years.
I don't mention Carl Robinson here because he's been anti-gay from the source and isn't trying to "go against the leave of the people."
